Job Description

Position Overview

SMX is seeking an **AI Engineer** to support our government client directly at Camp Smith. In this position, you will design, develop, test, and enhance AI-enabled systems that directly optimize client operations, mission workflows, and organizational Knowledge Management. You will act as the technical bridge, transforming real-world operational and military defense processes into practical tools integrated into AI harnesses, prompt systems, and agentic workflows.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and maintain production-grade AI-integrated systems to enhance mission workflows and clinical decision support.
  • Serve as a primary technical resource supporting the **Maven Smart System** as the core AI and operational integration platform.
  • Develop robust **Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)** workflows utilizing trusted organizational and tactical data sources.
  • Design reusable AI patterns, prompt templates, structured output pipelines, and prompt chains.
  • Support the training, fine-tuning, and domain adaptation of **in-house LLM capabilities** using approved data environments.
  • Integrate advanced agentic workflows that securely retrieve information, call custom tools, summarize content, and generate draft intelligence products.
  • Implement vector search, data ingestion pipelines, embedding models, and custom AI search functionalities.
  • Establish testing and evaluation methodologies to validate AI system relevance, safety, and accuracy.
  • Collaborate closely with AI Integrators and Knowledge Systems Integrators to maximize active user adoption.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Experience: 5–8 years of relevant technical experience building AI-enabled systems, automated workflows, or data integrations.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related STEM field (relevant experience may substitute).
  • Security: Clear active **DoD Top Secret / SCI clearance** (U.S. Citizenship is strictly mandatory for work on this contract).
  • Compliance: Must meet applicable **DoD 8140 / DCWF requirements** (IAT Level II / IAM Level I certifications preferred).
  • Core Knowledge: Strong technical grip on RAG architectures, LLM orchestration, agent frameworks, embeddings, vector search, and human-in-the-loop validation frameworks.
  • Operational Focus: Military operational experience or a deep understanding of standard military workflows is strongly preferred.

Desired Technical Assets:

  • Prior experience developing AI tools natively within cloud environments for defense or intelligence agencies.
  • Familiarity with the **Palantir** ecosystem or direct configurations within the **Maven Smart System**.
  • Proficiency in Python, API orchestration, and structured enterprise data pipelines.
